Book Review: The parable of the pipeline by Burke Hedges

Opportunities, unlike jobs.
Usually don’t advertise themselves in newspaper.
– Burke Hedges

Being financially free is something everybody dreams of right? But we all go the traditional way to achieve it, which is to do 9-5 jobs. But later end up realizing that a 9-5 job gives us scope to survive and save but never makes us financially free. This book helps you understand that even by doing your daily job, how one can become financially free.

This book puts the spotlight on the real facts of life. Showcasing that the money being earned in any of the job professions is based on the number of hours that you have spent. This means if efforts are not being given on a particular day, then you don’t get paid. And the money we earn is going to be over one day unless we make our money work for us and make more money out of it.
So in short, working a 9-5 job and making money, doesn’t matter how big your paycheck is, it is not going to help you to survive for long. This book helps you understand, how to manage your money and how you can invest it along with your time to become financially free.

To make a sustainable living it is important to make a source of income that can give you profits even when you are not working for it. Now, this can be done in two ways.
The first is to invest your money and let the money work for you and give you more money. This plan takes time and this is for securing your life after retirement.
The second is to invest your time and build a plan which takes a lot of effort from you in the beginning. You will need to sacrifice all your luxury of spending leisure time for the fun to working on building a plan which can eventually in a couple of years give you profit for sustaining without even doing anything.

Our daily 9-5 jobs can make our present good and luxurious but a pipeline building plan will secure your present and future.
But coming from a different perspective, both methods are important and both can be implemented simultaneously. It is important to follow the first method which is slow and takes a very long time but at the same time, you can start working on a side plan which will make your next few years exhausting but after that, life will be stress-free. Keep your eyes on the prize and work extra hours on building your own business. It is going to take all your efforts in the initial stage of building your business but it is going to give you all the leisure time you need in the coming future.

Book Review: Atomic Habits by James Clear

Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement.
– James Clear

“Atomic Habits” has become one of the most popular book in self-help genre. And after reading it, I found it very practical to implement in our daily life and the examples given by James on Psychological aspects are incredible. He has given a detail breakdown of slowly shaping your lifestyle and making minor changes on daily basis and change your habits to achieve excellence.

James has also mentioned many real life examples of many athletes, entrepreneurs, artists and other successful people who managed to change their lives by making very small changes in their habits on a daily basis. He has also mentioned that when we try to change our bad habits and fail to do so, it is not our fault, we fail because of the system we are molded into from our childhood. It is our lower self-esteem which takes over our mind and our brain starts repeating in our head that, It’s not gonna happen for you.
Human behavior changes every day with situation and circumstances but what doesn’t change is human nature and his/her believes. And in this book James has explained how we can change that to achieve our desired goals by changing our inbuild behavior.

Even when you are trying to adapt a good habit, it is very much obvious and normal to fail in it to implement it in your daily routine. But with slow and small approach it can be achieved. If you will think that, from tomorrow I want to wake up at 5 am instead of 8 am. It’s not gonna happen, you will definitely fail on the second day or the third day. But instead, if you try waking up at 7:45 am for a week and then 7:30 am for the next week, your body will automatically start adapting to the change and you will feel more confident about yourself. He has mentioned that by making 1% change every day can give you massive result on a longer period. He calls it 1% rule.

There are many more theories mentioned in the book, to know more about it do read it and you will not regret it for sure.

Book Review: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie

It isn’t what you have or who you are or where you are or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.
– Dale Carnegie

We are living in twenty first century and in the current times making friends digitally is very very easy. People talk virtually through many social media platforms but when it comes to making real friends and having a real bond, most of us are lacking behind. Dale Carnegie wrote the book “How to win friends and influence people” in the year 1936 but it is still one of the best book which can help you in making a reliable social circle of your own in today’s time.

Carnegie has explained each and every step and point in a very understandable way. And the best part is he has jotted down very small and minute things which we hardly ever notice in our own way of talking and meeting people. Like at times we meet people and talk to them, but we don’t show complete interest in what they are saying but in return we do expect them to give us their complete attention.

He has pointed out how we want others to like us but we never take the initiative in liking them first. We want to be important part of other people’s lives but we never try to make them feel that they are important to us. The only way to influence other people is to talk about what they want and show them how to get it. These are few examples of how Carnegie has explained in the book the process of making new friends and wining them and how to influence people towards the betterment of our lives and getting success. But at few points I did felt that all the steps mentioned in the book is not relatable by all kind of personalities. It may happen that few of the steps may conflict your own opinion in life. But having said so, to change your life you have to come out of your own comfort zone.

Book Review: Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson

Does anyone ever like to welcome change into their life?
We all like to stay in our comfort zone and live our life blissfully, isn’t it?
But life doesn’t ever go as planned and we all are very well aware of it. So how do you deal with the changes that come in your journey of life? Do you embrace it happily or you start stressing out and stay stubbornly inside your precious cocoon?

This book tells a story of four different characters, who are facing the same situation but each one have a different approach to get out of it. When their only means of survival which is “cheese” is taken away from them, how they move on in life. Do they try to find a new way of survival or will they just give up? You need to read the book to know more about it.

Usually, self-help books are very directive with advice and instructions. But what I liked about this book is, you get to read a story and then you get to take life-lesson from it in your own perspective. Every person who reads this book tries to compare themselves with one of the four characters from the story.

There are a lot of people who are scared to get out of their comfort zone and many feel stuck in their current life. If you are one of those people, then this particular book is for you. In a way, it will make you believe that change can bring good into your life and make it better.

Book Review: The Bet by Anton Chekhov

Book Cover

The Bet” is a short story written by a Russian writer Anton Chekhov in 1889. It is a fiction story based on morality. Even though the story is short, Chekhov has shown what is the real beauty of life. Even though we are blessed wealthily in life, we generally take everything for granted. People don’t realize what actually matters in life for surviving. We never take in to account what the nature and society gives us on day to day basis to survive in this world.

It is an eye opening story and is definitely a must read. The story starts with a party where high level rich bankers and lawyers are socializing. And the discussion is going on whether capital punishment is worse than life imprisonment. They are debating that on one side capital punishment can be very brutal being death penalty and government shouldn’t take something that they cannot give back, on the other side life imprisonment is equally brutal as a person dies every single day being confined within a closed place with basic surviving necessities and no contact with the outer world.

When this is going on a young lawyer gets really furious saying that capital punishment is worse and for severe crime, life imprisonment is enough for redemption. At the same time a rich banker challenges the young lawyer that he would bet two millions if he could stay in solidarity imprisonment for even five year and survive. And to that the young lawyer said, if he would get two millions he can stay in solidarity for fifteen years.

And that’s when the bet starts. The young lawyer is kept in solidarity prison for fifteen years with no contact to outside. He is not allowed to hear or see anything that is going on outside. He is only given the privilege of food, books, wine and tobacco in his cell. He can ask for as many books or any kind of books he likes to read. He can get as much wine and tobacco through a small window in his room. If he completes his fifteen years then he gets two millions.

Now the suspense is will the young lawyer be able to survive this self imprisonment solidarity or will he fail? What will the rich banker do. Because two millions is a huge amount to pay for a bet.

To know what happens ahead and who wins the bet you need to read the book. 🙂

Book Review: Girl in room 105 by Chetan Bhagat

Hello Everyone!

Here is my next book review.

Click on the above image to buy.

I read this book and I can say that it’s a total page turner. Meaning you can’t stop yourself to read it till the end. People who have read other books written by Chetan Bhagat will find this particular book very refreshing. First time he has written a murder mystery book and I was euphoric to read it. The story was very well outlined.

This book has everything in it, murder, suspense that’s gonna keep you on edge, heartbreak, terrorism, politics. Well in a way everything is covered.

The story is about a guy Keshav and a girl name Zara. Keshav is a former IIT student who falls in love with a girl named Zara from Kashmir and obviously she is very beautiful, in a way every guy’s dream girl. She is smart, talented and very popular. Where Keshav is a son of senior RSS member and Zara is a Muslim girl from Kashmir you can understand what a controversial and dramatic story it can be. While Keshav is struggling with his career to get a good job in a good MNC IT company and is teaching in coaching center to survive, Zara is pursuing her PhD in IIT Delhi. They fall in love and have an amazing relationship and eventually they breakup because of family unacceptance and mutual disagreement. Suddenly after four years of breakup Keshav gets text messages from Zara on her birthday night to meet her like old times to reconnect, that’s when the story actually starts. Because when he reaches to her room to wish her happy birthday, he finds her dead.

Obviously he is shocked to death and in the same time he himself falls into a terrible position. Because when he sees the love of his life dead in front of his eyes he also becomes a prime suspect to her death. How he gets out of suspects list and gets the urge to find the actual killer is a thrilling journey. The story is narrated by Keshav throughout the book and as he calls it is an “unlove story”. And then Keshav starts digging for clues with the help of his best friend/roommate Sourav to find the real killer. Hopefully you will find this book as riveting as I found it.

Book Review: Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer

Click on the above link to buy.

Hello Everyone!

So I read this book recently “Midnight Sun” by Stephenie Meyer. It is a companion novel to the book “Twilight”. The Twilight book came in 2005, in which the whole story was narrated by the female protagonist Bella. It was Bella’s side of the story with her perspective about her love story showing her compassion for Edward even though he is a vampire. But in the entire series, we never got to know Edwards thought or his feelings about being in love with a human.

Well people who loved the Twilight series, for them this book is a treat to sink their teeth into. You are going to know Edward’s struggle about his feelings for Bella while his thirst is overpowering his senses. How he falls in love with a human being when all his senses are pushing him to just quench his thirst for blood? Well, this book is going to tell you all about it. Being a vampire, Edward is also gifted with the power of reading people’s mind and hearing everything that is going on in their head. And also he is much faster than other vampires. Well, the twist is he can’t read only one particular human’s mind and obviously it’s Bella. These things are already told in the book Twilight. But in Midnight Sun you will get to know how this particular twist makes Edward curious about the girl he wants to kill the most in the entire world. How his curiosity overpowers his normal senses and reflexes and while he tries to figure this girl out he falls in love with her.

It’s quite funny and romantic, the way Edward tries to figure out Bella by just talking to her and asking her about her favorite books, movies, food, color etc. Well, normal human beings get to know each other the same way, while they make guess and make mental judgements. But being a vampire with the ability to read minds, trying to figure out a human without this ability is very irritating for him.

In this book, you will also get to know more about Edward’s family. You will get to know in detail about Edward’s foster parents and foster brother and sister. And how they react to the addition of Bella into their life.

People who haven’t read the Twilight series yet, even they can also start with this book and if you like the story then you are definitely going to read the Twilight series as well.
